My mom (Pearl) and Weldon were both very young when they met during the Second World War. She was stationed at Cornwallis in Nova Scotia, serving as a Sick Berth Attendant in the Navy. Weldon was a dashing young sailor who was injured – Mom was one of his caregivers. Each of them subsequently married other people and lived happily ever after - until Doreen died some years ago. It was well after Doreen died that Weldon contacted me, and learned that ‘Pearl' had died in 1999 here in Alberta. Weldon was my cheering section. He felt a connection to me as his old friend's daughter, and I think he sometimes wished I was ‘Pearl,' rather than just sounding like her…! Regardless, he treated me like a queen, and liked to talk to me on the phone because I sound like Mom used to. My aunt and I had the great pleasure of meeting Weldon and his family in Ontario a couple of years ago and I'm truly sorry to say that I won't see him again this fall as planned. I want to thank the entire McIlmoyl family for making me feel so welcome in Weldon's life - and for sharing your dad with me. I want to thank you and your dad for the gifts, the maple syrup, the jokes, the warmth, the friendship. He is looking down on us now from a place that is free of pain, and we cannot be sorry for that. But I will miss him always, just like you will. Penny Craig Lethbridge, Alberta (403-795-7066)
