Ed Kanis

Obituary of Ed Kanis

KANIS, Edward Dirk

Passed away at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on July 24, 2025. Ed Kanis in his 88th year. Beloved husband of Gertrude “Trudy”, nearing their 65th year of marriage. Cherished father of Ed, Anne (Cal) and Rick (April). Missed by his grandchildren Shaun, Stephanie (David), Andrew, Bryce (Christina), and Madison (James). Survived by his brother Al (Jenny), and sister-in-law Donna van Ast. Predeceased by his brothers and their spouses Bill (Pat), Peter (Marj), Henry (JoAnne), and Clarence (Joan). Loved by many nieces, nephews, and family in Holland.

Ed grew up on a farm in Phelpston Ontario, and from there went on to Teacher’s College.  He met his lovely wife to be Trudy and they were married and had 3 children. They settled in Peterborough where he taught at Grove, Prince of Wales, and Warsaw public schools.  Later in his career, Ed and Trudy decided to “buy a farm”, moving the family to the Norwood area.  Ed knew the meaning of hard work and ran the farm while also teaching full time.  His favourite pastimes were “puttering” on the farm, playing games of all kinds, and spending time with family.  Ed was quiet, but kind and helpful to family and community.  He believed in “giving back” and volunteered for many years.  A life well lived, he will be missed by all.

A huge thank you goes out to the PRHC teams at the Diabetes Clinic, Dialysis Unit, and   especially Dr Butan who showed him great kindness.
