Rosemary Eckert

Obituary of Rosemary Ann Eckert

ECKERT, Rosemary

We are celebrating the life of a wonderful mother, grandma, great grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and dear friend of many people whose lives she has touched.  Rosemary’s deep love, compassion, empathy, and thoughtfulness for family and friends is truly her legacy.  Her strong commitment to keeping connected to people, making them feel loved, no matter where they lived, was appreciated by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

On the shores of beautiful Lake Huron in the town of Kincardine, Rosa and Salvatore “Thomas” Caruso celebrated on January 21st, 1932, the birth of a girl, a younger sister to Joan and eventual older sibling to Thomasina and Barbara.  As she matured, the young girl assisted in the family fruit market—not just at the cash register but also hefting crates of fruit in the back room.  This solid work ethic held Rosemary in good stead when she moved to St Joseph’s School in London where she began her decades-long career as a nurse.  Upon graduating she received a scholarship to study in Vancouver where she perfected her skills in the O R and met a prairie boy, Bernard Eckert, who would become her husband.  They soon became the parents of Trisha, Tom, and Rose before a transfer took the family to Toronto—where Rosemary settled in for fifty-six years on Pemberton Avenue and nursed, first at Branson General Hospital and then at North York General.  The whirligig of time eventually spun in the three D’s: Dave, Darlene, and Duncan, Rosemary’s children-in-law.  A few more spins of the clock and she found herself the much-loved grandmother of nine and then their spouses: Chris (Krysta), Melanie (Joel), Pat (Ian), Cynthia (Greg), Travis (Samantha), Peter (Charlotte), Aaron, Thomas, and Brian.  Then to her immense satisfaction Rosemary became great grandmother “GG” to Alora, Georgia, Lochlan, Noëlla, Benji, and Oscar. Without exaggeration, all of those many people who were fortunate enough to love and have been loved by this remarkable woman can attest that the world is a better place for her having been in it.  We’ll all miss her greatly.  Rosemary died peacefully on November 3, 2025.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Rosemary’s life will be held at St Alphonsus Ligouri Catholic Church, 1066 Western Avenue, Peterborough, Ontario, on November 8th at 11:00AM.  A celebration of life will follow at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, 1030 Armour Road at 12:15pm.
