Katya was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung, a very rare cancer, on February 7th, 2024. At the time of her diagnosis, she was fourteen weeks pregnant with twin boys. In order to ensure the safety of her children, she declined treatment until after their delivery. Katya was an enthusiastic traveller, participating in a one-year exchange program in the Netherlands, Canada World Youth in Brazil, and a study semester in Panama as part of her environmental sciences degree at McGill University, where she carried a full scholarship. Over the course of her life, she was fluent in French, Spanish, Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese.
She carried her passion for the environment into her professional life, educating the public in ways to protect our natural heritage. She was an educator at EcoSource and later an education specialist with the Region of Peel. Her dedication was well noted by her team members. Katya served as president of the Ontario Society of Environmental Educators from 2015 to 2017.
She took great enjoyment in music, singing with her friends and unwinding with Karaoke. She was an avid reader, loved cozy weekend afternoons with tea and board games, and weekend escapes to the country.
She was loved by many. Her kindness, empathy, warmth and gentle nature created many lifelong friendships. These relationships were of the utmost importance to her, and she remained devoted to spending time with her friends over her lifetime.
