Obituary of Hendrina Parcels
PARCELS, Hendrina (née Terpstra). Passed away peacefully at Campbellford Memorial Hospital on January 12th. Wife of the late Allan (January 12th, 2010). Mother to Jim (Jen) of Guelph and their daughter Lauren; to Gary (Darlene) of Stirling and their children Brady, Brylie, Matthew and Mackenzie; and to Richard (Lucy) of Schomberg and their children Alicia (Joe) and Bianca.
Born in Bemmel, Friesland, The Netherlands on March 24th, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Inte Terpstra and Hilda (Rijpma) of Norwood. She was one of ten children—sister to John, Gert, Cecilia, Freida, Joan, George, and Helen, and predeceased by her sister Ida and brother Gerard.
In 1948, Hendrina immigrated to Canada with her parents and six siblings aboard the Kota Inten, arriving through Pier 21 on April 18th. The family travelled by train to Montreal to meet relatives before continuing on to Peterborough in Uncle Wieb’s dark blue 1947 Pontiac. They first settled in Springville, later moved to Hastings, and eventually made their home on a farm in Dummer Township, just north of Norwood on County Road 40.
She spent her married life in Norwood, dedicated to her home and widely known as a gifted seamstress. Hendrina was deeply involved in her community, volunteering with the I.O.D.E., the Norwood Fair Board, and St. Paul’s C.W.L. One of her proudest achievements was her induction into the Norwood District High School Hall of Fame.
A passionate traveller, she visited nearly every province in Canada, several U.S. states, and returned to The Netherlands many times—well documented by the eight thousand 35 mm slides she collected along the way.
In her later years, Hendrina made her home at Burnbrae Gardens in Campbellford, where she was cared for by exceptional staff and warmly remembered by the many friends she made there.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the HENDREN FUNERAL HOME – NORWOOD CHAPEL. A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 21st from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Hendren Funeral Home (36 Queen Street, Norwood). Followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:30 PM at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church (4186 Highway #7, Norwood). After Mass, a reception will be held at the Hendren Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the St. Paul’s C.W.L by calling 705-639-5322 or by visiting www.hendrenfuneralhome.com.
We entrust Mom to God’s mercy and the hope of the resurrection. Please recite at least one decade of the Rosary for both Mom and Dad.
