In the early 1990's the Federated Women's Institute challenged members to help expand and encourage new branches of WI to be formed and bring another generation into the work of WI. Margaret was a determined and enthusiastic recruit for the job. The Centennial year of WI was approaching and many projects for community were proposed and endeavoured upon. Our branch, North Shore WI in Otonabee Township was a newly formed branch that Margaret helped into formation. She also helped the conception of a branch at Lakehurst. The North Shore WI remains an active group, some 30 years later, and a vibrant part of Otonabee township with many community projects achieved.
Margaret championed many causes over the years and community projects. The Selwyn Branch created a national best selling book on helpful household tips and championed reuse and recycling, the rites of this book were passed to the Federated WI.
Margaret was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, her life with John, the lambs that came in the spring, her past work as a teacher, were things she shared with her many WI friends and neighbours.
Many of the dedicated members of Peterborough District WI have gone before Margaret. Many rural women have benefited from the causes they took up in their communities. Margaret took her place in many executive roles and was President of Peterborough District WI during the Centennial year of the Federated Women's Institute of Canada-the events of celebration were numerous.
Communities are so much stronger because of people like Margaret Killeen.
Deepest sympathy to Rosemary and John David and families, she loved you all dearly.
