With family at her side, Irma Isabelle O’Handley passed away peacefully at Hospice Peterborough on March 16, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Irma was born on July 18th, 1956 in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to her parents, Lloyd and Ethel O’Handley. She moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1980. She carried her East Coast roots with her throughout her life, along with a strong spirit and deep love of music and singing. She had a way of brightening any room and gathering she was a part of. 

Remembered by her spouse, Vince Russell of Cambridge. Irma is survived and deeply missed by her loving children, Tammy Blair (Ryan), Troy O’Handley (Emily), and Thomas O’Handley. She will be missed and remembered by her grandchildren, Marcus, Brianna, Dominick, Damien, and Deklan. She is also survived by her sister, Corrine Petrie (Harry) along with many nieces and nephews and her chosen brother James MacKenzie (Heckie). 

Irma was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Ethel O’Handley; her sister, Judy MacLellan; her brothers, Norman McNeil (Myrna) and Gregory McNeil (Delores); her brother-in-law Harold Petrie; and her nephews, Delwin McNeil and Robert McNeil. 

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hospice Peterborough for their compassionate care, as well as to all family and friends for their support and prayers during this time. A special thank you to Scott and Virginia for spending time with Irma and making her feel deeply loved in her final days. 

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Irma’s life will be held at a later date with family and friends. She will be laid to rest in Nova Scotia with her parents.
