1924 - 2026
Our cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Dorothy Hodson, in her 102nd year, passed away peacefully at Canterbury Gardens with family by her side. Born and raised in Northampton, England, Dorothy attended Notre Dame School, Northampton, and the Salisbury Diocesan Training College. She married in St. Edmund’s Church of Hardingstone and emigrated to Canada on the Samaria-Cunard in 1954. Upon her arrival, she was hired as a teacher in Toronto, and she and her husband started their family there, moving to Calgary, Winnipeg, and Ottawa along the way.
Dorothy was especially proud of her work toward continuing education with the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. She was a long-time member of All Saints’ Kingsway Church in Toronto, where she found great comfort and community. Dorothy is survived by her children David (Suzanne), John (Lumpun), Christine (Andy), and Peter (Vicki). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and her grandchildren Luke, Sam, Jack, John, Kelly, Cassia, Justine, James, and Evan. While maintaining her abiding love for England, Dorothy became a proud Canadian citizen and lived her life with joy, resilience, and compassion for others. In retirement, Dorothy became one of the first residents of The Regency, Lakefield, where she made many wonderful friends.
A great lover of dogs, birds and all creatures, Dorothy also valued glorious flowers, an appreciation embedded in her DNA through generations of florists. Her special joys were hats of all creations, music, Mahjong, swimming, fireplaces, chocolate, and perfect cups of tea. She will be truly missed by all who loved her, including Judy, Peter, and Aga in Toronto, and Goddaughter Jane. Dorothy is predeceased by her parents Alexander and Annie Swannell and her siblings Grace, Gordon, Joan, Alec, and Russell, and by her husband Bernard.
