Obituary of Mary Bittle

Entered into rest at Specialty Care Case Manor, Bobcaygeon, on Sunday, July 29, 2012, in her 102nd year. Predeceased by husbands Thomas Edward Bittle (1988) and Edward Barber, and by her only child, Joan Barber (1975). She is survived by her brother-in-law, Lloyd Bittle of Bolton, ON. Mary was the aunt of Jean and Harold Edward (Ted) Pollock, of Bobcaygeon and the late Doreen Valerie Pollock. She was also predeceased by her two older sisters, Elizabeth Hannah (Jean) Milne and Lena, and brother-in-law, Douglas Alexander Milne. Born in England, Mary came to Canada with her family as a baby and was raised in Toronto, Ontario.  She worked for Woolworths and was secretary to one of the senior executives for several years.  She was a founding member of the Crawford Street Congregational Church in Toronto, and sang in the choir, where she met her second husband, Ed, as he was the organist and choir director.  Mary stayed on in Weston for many years after Ed’s death and then moved up to Peterborough to Applewood Retirement Home, to be near her nephew Ted and his wife, Jean  From there she came to Specialty Care Case Manor in January 2001.  Mary was a great reader and loved to knit and crochet. She loved cats and dogs, having had many in her life. At Mary’s wish, cremation has taken place and interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, beside her late husband, Thomas Edward Bittle. Our grateful thanks go to the great nurses and staff of Specialty Care Case Manor who looked after Mary so well and to Dr. Stephen Oldridge for his abundant and gentle care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes, Lindsay, ON. Arrangements provided by MONK FUNERAL HOME, 6 Helen Street, Bobcaygeon (705-738-3222 or 866-393-0063).  Messages of condolence, donations, memories and photos may be placed at www.monkfuneralhome.com
