FILMAN, Barbara “Eileen”

Passed away at Extendicare, Lakefield on Wednesday February 14, 2024, in her 104th year. Eileen graduated as a Registered Nurse from Hamilton General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943.  She married Gordon David Filman on June 10, 1944.  Eileen practised Nursing at Hamilton General and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospitals.  While working night shift she carried a flashlight to check patients without waking them. Colleagues referred to Eileen as “Flash”.  Eileen was a member of the African Violet Society of Canada and became a judge for flower shows. She was a member of the Lakefield Horticultural Society and showed plants at the Lakefield Agricultural Fair.  Eileen inspired daughters Mary and Jane to enter the profession of Nursing.  Based on Eileen’s belief that a degree would become entry to RN practice, Mary completed a BScN at University of Toronto.  Jane graduated from Mohawk College as a Registered Practical Nurse.  Her son David graduated Honours Geography at McMaster University and went on to become a Locomotive Engineer with CN and then VIA Rail.  Eileen has always had a great interest in the lives of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. They have always enjoyed her encouragement and looked to her for her opinions and advice. We could all look forward to a lively discussion of current events when we visited.  Beloved wife of the late Gordon Filman.  Loving mother of Mary Ferguson-Paré (the late Ed), Jane Barnes (Ed), and David Filman (Carole).  Eileen will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Rob (Elke), Dean (Natalie), Steven (Carly), Ruth (the late Ray), Catherine, great grandchildren Bryan, Oskar, Michael, Natasha, Richard (Julia), Scout, Jackson, great-great grandchildren Owen and Iris and step great grandsons Lukas and Justin.  Eileen is predeceased by her sister Jean Wilson (Jack) and brother William (Lorna).  A memorial service will be held at THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES LAKEFIELD CHAPEL, 66 Queen Street, on Saturday February 24, 2024 at 12:00 PM.  Visitation one hour prior to the service.  A reception will follow in the Heritage Room of the funeral home.  Interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Burlington, at a later date.  As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at the Lakefield United Church, by visiting www.hendrenfuneralhome.com or by calling 705 652-3355.
