A few years ago, my father took me to see Walter, the canoe he was working on, and to buy a few of his paddles. It was a wonderful visit. I feel very lucky to have been there to see him and that unfinished canoe. I can only imagine all of the skill, experience and canoe lore that has gone with him. It makes me ask myself--what have I built, what will I leave behind that bears the marks of my life? We can only hope that when we die, the world will be a lesser place because we are no longer there to give shape to it. Alas, we can't all be Walter Walkers. A fine, remarkable man. My best wishes to you.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of this kind and gentle master craftsman. Walter was as skilled and considerate in his dealings with people as he was with wood. My condolences to you Maxime but I am sure he is in a happy place. He was one of the finest men I have known.

Daphne Jane Rogers Molson, Claude Rogers' grandda posted a condolence

October 21,2009, This condolence is to comfort the family of Walter Edward Walker. It is from Daphne Jane Rogers Molson, Claude Rogers' granddaughter, the eldest daughter of his youngest son, David Burnet Rogers. I was very grieved to hear from the Peterborough Regional Health Centre that Walter died. I left several messages with his nurse to take to him a message comfort before he died, I bought his wonderful tape to remember him always, and to always have him in my house as the who's who he was, the most perfect canoe craft builder who ever worked twenty years, perhaps more, for my grandfather, Claude Rogers. Several times I sat down to watch his canoe craftsman's tape that will be always in the Canadian Canoe Museum, and sold in its store, and catalogued in many libraries. I was made very interested by him in learning how to craft the building of a canoe.I was myself,in 1962, the world's youngest, female, Master Canoeist of the World Camping Association's examined canoe methodology. My outstanding canoe abilities I learned mostly at Camp Tanamakoon, a girls private camp in Algonquin Park over six years. Teachers of canoeing and tripping methods enjoyed using Peterborough Canoes for many years, they were the most excellent teaching mediums to teach campers canoeing with. Thousands of campers and others have enjoyed the spirit of a canoe for Walter's years of devoted work to the Peterborough Canoe Company. Thank you so much Walter for comforting my grandfather Claude his canoe business kept for years with yourself. Thank you for the Royal Canoe you built the Prince, HRH Andrew Mountbatten. It will always be treasured in our museum I am membered to still.Thank you Mrs. Walker for the pleasure of meeting Walter at his 100th birthday held at the museum and for the piece of his birthday cake and celebration and the enjoyment it was meeting you and yours and what we enjoyed together with the Prince,Andrew. I have asked John Summers to send a message to Prince Andrew Walter has gone to the Lord, and asked the Canadian Canoe Museum remember you. Thank you for all your wonderful work, your health saved, and for giving me any pleasure. I shall miss you Mr. Walker, and keep treasured who you were, in my home at 688 Gilchrist Street, Peterborough,Ontario K9H 4P3.It was a great pleasure having you Walkers. Sincerely, Daphne Jane Rogers Molson
