Heather, Susan, Warren - I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I had no idea that he was ill. I feel especially bad that I drove through the neighbourhood occasionally (I still miss Faraday St and my neighbours) and didn't stop in to say hello. I am heartsick. Thinking of you. Debra and Ciaran

Distance meant that I didn't meet Tom frequently but when I did, his company was always amusing and interesting; from visiting 144 Faraday with Peter way back in 1979 and seeing his amazing basement collection of useful things - our first time in North America - to a last visit in Peterborough with Christine in February 2009 when his old brightness shone again temporarily over lunch. It was always a pleasure to catch up with Heather & Tom and later Susan, Warren, Rachel & Sarah.

We remember Tom from the family gatherings we shared - one of the people we wish we'd had the chance to spend more time with. Knowing Susan, though, we see his sense of humour and strength. With our sympathy and best wishes.

Tom was a man of great scientific and technical talent, making his way from humble beginnings in a war-torn world, by true grit and determination. Though we met only infrequently, I enjoyed and admired his obvious ability.Heather and Susan you are in my thoughts and prayers as you mourn, remember -- and rejoice in a life well-lived and a victory won.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. I worked in Canmet with Tom 1975-95. I always enjoyed his sense of humour and his occasional rants on various subjects, usually our management. He was a first class scientist. Although I did not see him these past 15 years, I have fond memories. Colin Hamer
