CARMICHAEL, Donald Keith ""?? December 27, 1927 ""?? June 11, 2010 Passed away at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre in his 83rd year after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Predeceased by his parents, sister Elizabeth, and half brother Peter. He is survived by his wife Mary, step-son Scott Roberts, brother Bill (Dr. William Carmichael), half sister Sandra, and brother-in-law Michael Goble (Elizabeth) and family. Born in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, of Canadian parents, he returned to Toronto, Canada with his mother at age 7. He graduated from Ryerson University in 1953 with a degree in journalism and worked for 6 years as a reporter with the late Toronto Telegram Newspaper covering the Osgoode Hall Beat. In 1959, he began a 24-year career in public relations with Ontario Hydro as a writer and editor of Hydro publications including Staff News and Hydroscope at head office in Toronto. Later he was also regional relations officer in Thunder Bay and London. On retirement he set about realizing a life-long dream ""?? becoming the editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper. In November 1984, he purchased the Lakefield Chronicle and began what would be a 10-year career in newspaper and real estate work. In 1994, he wrote a book, The Doctors Carmichael, about his medical family which included seven doctors and a number of nurses over a four generation period. His grandfather Dr. D.N. Carmichael, whose office was on Water Street, Peterborough, was the first to have an X-ray machine. Don was a lifelong volunteer, giving his time and expertise to a number of worthwhile organizations including the Alzheimer""?s Society, Arthritis Society, Community Care Lakefield, and Stony Lake and Upper Stoney Lake Environment Committee. A Memorial Service to celebrate Don""?s life will be held at 2pm Thursday, June 17th at Saint John the Baptist Anglican Church, Queen St., Lakefield. Reverend Munroe Scott officiating.
