What an amazing mentor and dear friend. At only 15 years of age my Mom and Dad allowed me to go on my first moose hunt with Art. The six of us booked a fly in hunt out of Wawa. Art was 38.
That was the start of an inseparable friendship and 40 years together. We hunted locally, all over Northern Ontario and even an Elk Hunt to British Columbia. This was where Art reflected on his three big events during that trip; he saw the mountains for the first time, he got his seniors discount after turning 65, and he had a pee in a marble urinal.
He did enjoy the simple things in life and kept us laughing till our sides were sore. On fly in trips where extra weight was critical he would pack such items as a fart machine or an alarm clock that sounded like a duck.
Every trip I would do my best to jump in beside Art when leaving. He had such a diverse taste in the music we listened to. We would talk non-stop. No subject was off limits. We would discuss the trip we were heading on, the trucks and equipment he was buying, the new guns and calibers, and of course, my girlfriend. He always wanted to know about your girlfriend. Art would have me tell you I am a much better person, a better hunter, and of course a much much better lover due to his influence. I would have to agree.
Art was all about the ladies. To the point he would corner our girlfriends/wives as soon as he saw them following a hunt and pointedly ask them if we had implemented his advice and aren't they glad Art taught us. It was Art who introduced me to "the flight of the bumblebee". I never knew it existed.
After 40 years with Art I even got to see him groom the next generation. As my son Travis and the other kids would sit around the table at the Coe Hill hunting camp, Art would spin a tale with all the young ones, eyes wide open and jaws dropped hanging on every word. Us fathers and uncles would sit back knowing exactly where this story was headed, because we had fallen for it ourselves and have heard it 100 times. When it ended and Art had completed his prank, everyone had a good laugh, and the young ones got a little more suspicious of Uncle Art's "true stories". Even today they still sing the dooda song in the woods.
Art taught these young kids cards. Where of course you had to be playing for money and when you lost you didn't get it back. That was part of the lesson.
I am eternally grateful to his beautiful wife Barb, his children, grand-children, and great-grand-children for sharing Art with me. My faith has me believe without a doubt Art is in heaven now. In a brand new body with no pain. He is with his parents and loved ones as he watches over each and every one of us. During the day he sits on a deer watch while Gord Baker gets the dogs started. Soon the deer hunt turns into a crazy coon catastrophe with Uncle Harry McConkey dumb founded. During the evenings he is playing euchre with the partner we all tried to get, Ken Fleetwood.
So when its my time and I pass through the gates of heaven, I know there will be a brand new black Ford pick-up pull up to meet me. Art will be behind the wheel. I will jump in the shot gun seat cause that's where I ride. Gear and groceries in the back and our guns behind the seat. I will start the cassette deck. It will be Tina Turner, and with it blasting out the speakers we will be off in a cloud, on another adventure. Till then, and when we meet again, Art will be with me everywhere I go.
God Bless Sure Shot 444,
Love Keith Armstrong
