So many memories,
we were all just kids having fun.
Hanging out, listening to music blasting.
We were all care free, you were always having a good time. We all didn’t have much but our friendship was golden. You were always there when we needed you. The little things, the big things... the best things. We saw each other get married, have kids, spent wonderful times together. I remember when Leo & I bought our 1st house, you, Sandy, Leo & me, sitting on the floor in living room. You started to knock on the wall. Your arm going up over your head. Back & forth. Knock, knock, knock. I think Leo joined in with you too. Me & Sandy looking baffled, I can hear Sandy say” Matt, Matt! What are you doing?” “ I am knocking”, he said with that devious grin on his face. Then he kept doing it, “Why are you doing it?” I asked, “Because I can! he said with such happiness in his voice. It was so profound because we all came from simple beginnings and in this moment we did not have to worry that someone would tell us to stop. As the years passed, our kids grew, the wonderful times spent at your & Sandy's cottage...what a gift. You were not just a friend to us, you were loved as a brother and always will be remembered as beautiful carefree spirit, you live on in our hearts forever...’til we meet again…
Love, hugs & kisses Leo, Ruby, Alex & Annika

I knew Matt through the NewYorkerOnline group and had the privilege of meeting Matt at MoparFest 2007. As well as the Chrysler New Yorkers, Matt had an interest in Chrysler Australia products. He was a fount of practical knowledge and a great guy. I'm very sad to hear the news of his passing. Rest in peace, brother.

I am so very sad to learn of Matt's passing. Matt was a kind and generous man, a brilliant mechanic, and an electrical/electronic wizard. I met Matt through our mutual admiration of old cars. Although we lived over 2000 km apart, I had the pleasure of hosting Matt and Christian at my home at one time and had the honour of being a guest in his home some years later, the time I met Sandy. I enjoyed Matt's company and treasured his friendship. R.I.P. my friend.

I knew Matt from his ownership of a 1978 Chrysler New Yorker. I met him via the Internet but he lived close by and was always willing to to lend a hand especially when my AC was wonky. Rest in Peace Matt. You will be missed.

Dear Elder Friends
We are still shocked and saddened by Matt's sudden passing. He was a good man and our security blanket at the lake. He generously shared knowledge and physically helped with many projects at our cottage.
A quite man, he was never the less an interesting person to chat with.
We miss him but his image is omnipresent everywhere that we look up at the lake.
We hope that has found the peace that eluded him. RIP Matt

James N. Holden. May 24th.
Mat and I worked together for many years at the IBM 3600 Cooperate Head Office
The Facilities dept included Christine Hurst. Susan McCabe, Anna Kazura, Ken mc Farlane and myself as there manager.
Mat generally looked after the electricians. Some times up to 10 men when things were busy. He would also do anything else that we were to ask. Thats why we called him McGiver.
Christine Hurst told me of Mats death. I was shocked and very upset. Like most of his friends we were thinking what could we have done and how could we have helped Mat.
My love and respect goes out to Sandy and her son and daughter. Sandy was always so nice and happy to see us when she came into our office. Such a lovely kind lady. She always asked about my son Jeremy. I do hope that her personal friends help her through this very sad time.
I will always remember Mat.
Sandy please accept our love and Condolences and know we are thinking and praying for you.
Jim Brenda and Jeremy Holden.

In the fall of 1993, Matt Elder and his father Jim were building my cabin near Coe Hill. The Toronto Blue Jays remarkably won their second World Series on October 23rd. When the Jay's victory was secured, Matt (in the upstairs bedroom) bellowed with excitement. In just his skimpies, Matt felt compelled to run outside and yell 'joy to the world' - all the while gyrating happily in the forest's autumn air.
Matt was a loving, gifted, spontaneous man with extraordinary renovation and mechanical skills. With Sandy, they were a dynamic duo in restoring their homes. Matt shared his talents with others whom he thoughtfully assisted with their needed repairs - truly the mark of a good and generous man. Matt's tragic passing is a great loss to his family and friends. May he now know peace eternal.

My friend.
Matt was a friend, workmate, and all-around good person. Matt and I spent many a day demolishing interiors of a house, plumbing, electrical, to installing slate floors. Matt always knew how to do things in a different way to make things run more smoothly and more efficiently. We had good laughs about things we had done and about the people we had met. Matt spent many weeks working on my own home and was the all-around fix-it guy to me. If I could not figure it out Matt could. Matt will miss you. Love Blake

We were very shocked and saddened to hear of Matt's passing. He was a man of many talents and he will surely be missed. Words can not adequately express how we are feeling in this time of loss. We can't imagine how hard this must be for Sandy, Christian and Jack Everett-Rose, but we know family and friends will rally around them and give them support they most certainly need.
Matt was the embodiment of a mechanical genius and he was admired by many, whether he knew it or not. He had a kind soul and I can't recall him ever having a mean word to say about anybody.
Matt has left us all with a little something missing, but that void will be filled with the fond memories we have of him.
With heavy hearts, we miss you Matt.
Alex, Melissa, Megan & Murphy.

Myself and Fred the cat will miss him dearly, he was a wonderful person. Matty and his wife took in Fred the cat because of strange circumstances, then they took in in Kazoo the wiener during a heat wave. Yes, I nearly had to wrench Fred the cat from Matty's hands when we were moving.

Matt and I have had minimal contact since our days at Valley Park JHS, but, oh, what an impression he has had on my life. For good and ill, I dare say. :) It was with Matt and Leo that I had my first (well, really, my only) experience of being picked up by the police on a late night/early morning jaunt into the countryside around Leo's family cottage by Lake Simcoe. I learned a variety of questionable life "skills" (hacks and vices, really) from Matt during that vacation and at other times. But I also learned to experience joy in every moment. Matt's laughter, energy and glee were always inescapable and infectious. It was a thrill to reconnect during the past decade, to see that he'd become the man, husband and dad we all hope to be. Unfortunately, I have no idea what challenges and sorrows afflicted him in the end. I wish I did. Instead, we substituted Facebook and nostalgia for real, renewed connection. I am sorry for that. My heart feels profound sympathy for Matt's closest loved ones - particularly, of course, Sandy, Christian and Bethany - and for all who loved and knew him. And I pray in hope for his happiness now in the hereafter, and that he knows the love we feel for him.
