Marilyn Esther Hatton   née Huycke        (17 August 1933 – 29 January 2023)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished mother Marilyn Hatton on Sunday 29thJanuary 2023, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. She passed away peacefully, without pain, knowing that she was loved and appreciated by family members and friends and that she had lived a good and long life. Marilyn was born on August 17th 1933 in Warkworth, Ontario to Lucille (née Lean) and William Ewart Huycke. She grew up on the family apple orchard in Warkworth with her two brothers and three sisters and attended Campbellford High School. She married Gerard (Gerry) Hatton on October 4th 1952, and thereafter resided in Peterborough, Ontario, raising their family of five rambunctious boys and volunteering her time, skills and caring for others for the rest of her long, happy and fulfilling life. Marilyn and Gerry were inseparable and happily married for almost 58 years until Gerry’s passing on January 10th 2010. She worked in banking for several years, had been a local District Commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada and later a Beaver Leader (Boy Scouts of Canada) for many years. She served for a time with the Army Reserve (Canadian Women’s Army Corps) attaining the rank of Corporal. She was a skilled knitter and avid reader. For years she volunteered at The Lumpy Factory, working with physically and mentally challenged adults, and volunteered for the Alzheimer’s Association. She freely and generously completed tax returns as a volunteer with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Programme for over 30 years. Marilyn was always a reliable, responsible, caring mother and a generous, exemplary volunteer, caregiver, and supporter to others. In her later years she bravely battled and vanquished cancer. Marilyn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, great-grandmother and always a great friend and neighbour. She and Gerry raised five sons -- Rick (Anne), Paul (Lise), Peter (Deborah), Shawn (Barbara) and Ted (Lonny). She was a loving and exemplary grandmother to Patrick (Cheryl), Michael, Marie-Claire, Jamie, Anna (Cole), Lucy, William (Laura), Edward, Johnathan (Tamara), Nathan, and Timothy, and great-grandmother to Alex, Lily, Milo, Cameron, Keira, Franklyn, Peter, and Guinevere. Marilyn is survived by her brother Gary (Dale) and sister Enid (Leigh) and was predeceased by her brother Bob (Shirley) and her sisters Elaine (Bill) and Dorothy (Ken, Mervin) and grandson Thomas. Special recognition also should also be accorded to her sister-in-law Jane who was so helpful and kind to Mom especially in her last years. The family greatly appreciates the care provided to Mom by the amazing, skilled and compassionate doctors, nurses and support staff at the Intensive Care Unit of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
