Obituary of Joan Edith Baker
BAKER, Joan
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our gracious mother, Joan Edith Baker (Coates), on February 28th, 2023 in her 91st year. Born August 14th, 1932 to John and Lucy Coates of Moncton, NB, Joan was raised in Moncton graduating from the Moncton School of Nursing, class of 1954. After a brief nursing career, she turned in her professional accolades to raise her family and later work alongside her husband Dave in the family business in what is now the hamlet of Big Cedar.
Joan was predeceased by our wonderful father Dave Baker in 2018 and an infant son John David (d. 1956). She is survived by her children Kathy Armstrong (John) of Apsley, Jeff Baker of Madoc, and Brian Baker of Big Cedar Lake. Proud grandma and nanny of Jared (Katelyn), Melissa (Garett), Trish (Nate), Karrie (Andrew), and Bethany. Beloved great-grandma to Aubrey, Jude and Ezra. She is also survived by her brother David Coates (Reggie) of Moncton NB and sisters-in-law Joyce Corner of Stony Lake, Diane Ferguson of Cambridge and Pherne (Lenore) McKee of Live Oaks Fla. Also sadly missed by Ralph Siegel of Peterborough and her “daughter in spirit” Carol Shewen of Woodview.
In her final years, Joan’s primary focus rested on reuniting with Dave while ensuring that her family was well equipped for their own individual journeys in life. Mission accomplished mom!
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the residents and staff at Sherbrooke Heights Retirement Residence, and more recently, Lakefield Extendicare, for their incredible kindness to both Joan and our immediate family.
A private family service will be followed with a celebration of her life, at a later date.
