To my dear childhood friend Wendy - I was so upset when my mum called me yesterday and read your dad's obituary to me. He was such a kind, patient and gentle man and you must be terribly upset at your loss. I am so sorry. I have always remembered, appreciated and valued many things about your dad: his endless patience during the Friday night drives up to your cottage; his endless patience and encouraging words the time he turned the ski boat around and picked me up at least 14 times in a row when you guys were teaching me how to waterski; his fondness for your golden retriever (was it Duchess?) and that little black Scottish terrier that almost drowned that one time when he fell off the dock and into the lake; his trust in you whenever he let us take the little motor boat over to the marina for the all-important 'snack run'; his happiness at the simple pleasures in life - like frying up the fish we had caught Saturday nights for Sunday breakfasts; his tolerance of our general girl goofiness (the poor man had to put up with his three daughters and all their friends oohing and ahhing over the Bay City Rollers! - must have drove him crazy but I never saw him show it!); his making us feel like we had done something really special and meaningful when we would go out in the canoes on the lake in the twilight and play (poorly!) Amazing Grace with our grade 6 recorder skills; and his general sense of serenity as we all sat around quietly reading or playing one of the one hundred ways we learned to play solitaire...How he was able to be so patient and kind while working so hard Mondays-Fridays will never cease to amaze me!! Really and truly, I loved the time I spent with you and your family up at your cottage and it was due, in a huge part, to how comfortable and welcome your mum and dad always made me feel. I also remember your dad being a very generous donator whenever I hit him (or, more accurately, his company - Starr and Tarasick - if memory serves me correctly) up for those irritating swim-a-thon donations! I am so sorry that I lost touch with you and your mum and dad and I am so sorry that I never got to tell them how truly special my summers with you guys were. In fact, I changed employers in order to have an opportunity to live in cottage country and I know it was due, in a very large way, to the wonderful summers I spent with you and your family. I hope that inside your dad knew what a tremendous and positive impact he had on me. I hope you know too. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. I know you must miss such a kind man terribly. I would love to hear from you if/when you have a chance to respond. If not, I understand, but do hope you know that I am truly, truly saddened by the loss of this kind and gentle man. Take care Fondly Nancy Page
