Obituary of June Winnifred Woodend

WOODEND, June W. (nee Woodruff) Died peacefully at her home in Mapleview Residence, Norwood surrounded by her children and friends, April 13, 2015 at the age of 86. Predeceased by beloved husband Sam Woodend. Cherished mother of Dr. Kirsten Woodend (Sandy Gunn), Richard and Stephanie Douma. Loving grandmother of Jennifer (Phil Brown) Eric, Julie and Sarah Woodend, Neil and Marieke Douma and great granddaughter Cassie Brown. Predeceased by her beloved sister Barbara Steele. June was born in Toronto and while she spent most of her life in Ottawa she also lived in Edmonton; St. Bruno, Quebec; Metz, France; North Bay and most recently Norwood. June studied nursing at the Montreal General Hospital and public health nursing at McGill University and worked as a VON nurse in both Ottawa and northern Ontario. She volunteered extensively while raising her three children and was named the city of Nepean Citizen of the Year in 1986 for her work in developing the volunteer palliative care program at the Queensway Carleton Hospital as well as her other endeavours. All who knew June will deeply mourn her loss. Her family would like to thank all of the staff at Mapleview who have contributed greatly to the quality of mom's life over the past four years.
