I have been remembering Tony's inspired storytelling of a morning bird walk at my parents' home in Goulais River, Thanksgiving 1991 perhaps? He took us for a walk with words and performed all the birds' calls.
Then there was that one time Andrew and I got up early enough to go birding with him. I think we looked for owls for awhile. My clearest memory of that trip is of colours. I didn't know we had green herons in Ontario. The indigo buntings, and something very red - was it a tanager?
I am grateful to have known Tony's patience and understated understanding, and send my condolences to Diana, Andrew and Carol, and all of your family.

Kareen and I were very sad to hear about Tony’s sudden passing. Tony was a mentor for me at Lakefield Research and he taught me a lot of what I know today about grinding. Kareen learnt a lot about bird watching with him while participating to numerous bird counts and atlassing. Tony was always there to share his knowledge professionally and socially, he will be greatly missed.

Tony played a large role in my apprenticeship into learning about the world of nature when I was growing up in Peterborough. His generosity and passion for birding was greatly appreciated and I will always remember his company for long trips to Pelee or short forays around Peterborough to chase and look at birds. He always offered me support and encouragement when I saw him in the years that followed. I will miss him.

Tony's passing is a huge loss to the Peterborough and area naturalist community. He was such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic birder, butterflier and outing leader. Tony added a great deal to our knowledge of nature in the Kawarthas through his involvement in breeding bird surveys, the Breeding Bird Atlas, the Christmas Bird Counts and his near-daily outings with Jerry Ball. We will miss Tony a great deal.

Tony was my friend since I was a young man recently married when moved to Peterborough in the mid-70s. A friend, a companion, a mentor - he was one of the best people I have ever known - a top notch birder, butterflier, odonator and a botanist. I will miss my dear friend.

I am very sorry to hear of Tony's passing. He took me on birding trips as I was new to the area (and country) and wanted to learn more about Canadian wildlife. It's thanks to him that I saw my first barred owl (which I still remember as an amazing experience that could not have been possible without him). My experience of him was that he was kind, generous with his time, patient, and eager to transmit his knowledge.

I crossed paths with Tony many times working at both Petroglyphs and Presqu'ile and with the Peterborough Field Naturalists. He was always willing to help me in documenting records for the park or providing photos. A great lost to the naturalist community and an even bigger one for his Family. My sympathies.
