Obituary of Herman Formsma
FORMSMA, Herman (1922-2016)
Passed away at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Friday August 12, 2016 at the age of 93.
Herman, known lovingly as Dad, Opa or Oom Herman, was born in Grijpskerk, Netherlands November 3, 1922. Dedicated husband of the late Wilhelmina (Miep) Formsma for 53 years. Beloved father to Jake (Julie) & Andy (Peggy) and treasured Opa to Jocelyn, Karen, Eric, Natasha and Sarah. Cherished uncle to Irene (Heinz), Dorothy (John), the late Len (Joyce), and Rob (Jenny), and their families. He is also survived by his sister Meta (Theo) and her family, his sister-in-law Nellie (the late Len) and extended family in the Netherlands.
After WWII, Herman moved to Nova Scotia as a farmer, later, he became an electrician in Oakville, Ontario but "spent the best years of his life" retired at the home he and Miep built near Furnace Falls, Ontario. He was an avid model train hobbyist and built an elaborate model train display in the basement of their home.
He will be remembered for his playful sense of humour and his grand sense of adventure. He loved and welcomed everyone he met (as long as they could put up with his teasing) and he was loved very much in return. He leaves us with a great example of someone who truly lived his life to the fullest.
His celebration of life will take place at THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, LAKEFIELD CHAPEL, 66 Queen St, Lakefield on Tuesday August 16, 2016 at 1:00 PM with visitation to commence at 12 noon.
