Our heartfelt condolences Gail and family.
We had the absolute pleasure of being welcomed at your farm on various occasions. We also enjoyed spending a week in the Bahamas with all of you for Chris and Amy's wedding. Gary will be sadly missed. Ella has shared many farm stories with us over the years, and these are memories that will be cherished always. Getting to "drive" the tractor and doing chores with Gary have been a highlight of her summer since she was small. Will, Gabe and Macy have very fond memories of their visits with Ella at the farm. Gary brought a John Deere bike to Ella for her first birthday and it is still being enjoyed by Ella's cousins, ten years later. We really hope during this difficult time that you can find some peace in remembering the many lives he has touched and the very special memories that he helped create.
Thinking of you,
Dan and Brenda and family

Please accept our deepest condolences Gail and family, in Gary's passing. We will miss seeing him and talking to him. It was common for Gary to drive by the house with a load of hay and have him stop to query how all was doing. After a knee replacement we tried to tell him how easy a procedure it was. Not for him he would say, not ready yet.
He was genuinely caring and interested in anyone he met, presenting himself with a huge warm smile and the sparkle of mischief in his eye.
No doubt there will be a lot of handshaking, tears, laughs and tales shared where he is now and here with us as fond and loving memories are shared.
Rest in Peace Gary. You are missed.

Always enjoyed Gary's 'poor man' banter! 2 weeks ago Gary was in to shop and paid me for some scrap. He told me about a tv show he had watched. Evidently the least trusted people in the work force are lawyers and realestate agents (sorry bill). He set me up to ask who the most trusted were. He snorted and laughed as he made for the door 'farmers and nurses of course' l made for the door and bellered 'what did they say about scrap dealers?'....later that day I met him at Tim hortons...we both agreed we could barely afford to be there!... he will be missed by many...and Gail if u need anything we are here for u! Take care... joe and lou Crowley

I am so sad to learn of Gary's passing. I have only known him for a short period of time. He reached out to me to learn about our County of Peterborough project at Lang Pioneer Village Museum, in "Raising the Barn". First, he wanted to know who I was...this made me laugh, as being a Jopling, many in Selwyn, know the family name, as he did too, but he didn't know me. After I told him my life story and that I too was a farmers' daughter, we found common ground. We met and we talked about all things agriculture and that the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building is a very timely project that will showcase and celebrate our sector as the innovative and forward thinking industry it has always been, for many years within Lang Pioneer Village Museum.
On behalf of my colleagues at Peterborough County, Lang Pioneer Village Museum and our Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building Subcommittee, Thank you Gary, for seeing the value and importance this new facility will bring to educating all on the important role agriculture played and continues to play for years to come. Your legacy has been made within this "Barn" and we are extremely grateful to you.
It was my pleasure to get to know you and learn your life story and how important community is to you and your wife Gail and your giving nature.
Sincerely,
Karen Jopling

Gary will be dearly missed. I sure hope they have a John Deere tractor in good running order ready to meet him at the pearly gates. I have many fond memories of my big brother Gary. The one that sticks out the most is how happy he made me when he walked to the Metropolitan Store in downtown Peterborough and spent his paper route money he had saved to buy me a blue dress that I had wanted. it has been in the store window for a long time. He was 13 and I was 8 and that dress went to many birthday parties. On my last two visits to Peterborough, Gary and I got together. We went out for breakfast and Gary's entire conversation was about how good the kids were doing.....he was so proud of Tim, Julie, Brian and Amy. The breakfast almost turned into lunch when he started bragging about his grandchildren. He said being a "Pa" was way better than he imagined it would be. When I got a chance to talk I told him that we had planted a pretty good garden. He said that no one could garden like "my Gail". He claimed they had the best flower beds in Ennismore. I last visited with Gary and Gail last October and the flowers were still beautiful. He was right about Gail's gardening and baking skills. Gary, you will be dearly missed by Gail, your children, your grandchildren and your Smith and Murray family. May you rest in peace dear brother.
