To Altamae's Family,
I had the opportunity to meet Altamae and her family in the 1970s when I became involved with The Station Gallery in Whitby.
I will never forget Altamae's thoughtful kindness and generous spirit whenever she was involved at the gallery. For many years, she was an active member of the board of directors as well as our committees. During her tenure, she played a key role in many of the gallery's successes.
It was such a pleasure for me to work with Altamae on the renovation of a vintage boxcar into a unique printstudio for visiting artists and students; a personalized cookbook with members' recipes done in hand-printed calligraphy and drawings; and several special gallery events for the community.
Whitby was very fortunate to have Altamae and her family's support for The Station Gallery as it started to build its strong reputation as a visual arts centre for the community. We were truly blessed to have Altamae with us.
My thoughts are with you Jennifer and Doug as well as members of your family.
Linda Paulocik, former Director/Curator of The Station Gallery, Whitby.

I was saddened and shocked to hear of your sad news. I often met and talked to Altamae. The latest was in the drug store where we compared bronchial problems. Neither of us thought hers would be fatal. I shall miss our childhood reminiscing

Memories—many, many, many---too many to record going back to 1954 where we became roommates at Victoria College in Toronto. We were in an extension of Annesley Hall in an old red brick house residence at 151 Bloor Street. I watched the romance between her and Peter . After she and Peter married and lived in an apartment in Etobicoke , she held a “hen party” to mark my visit from Regina with a month-old baby girl. Visits over the years continued whenever I was east—Whitby, Rosedale (Toronto), Bobcaygeon , (parents’ homes, various cottages and her latest home on the canal). Philip, my husband, had his one and only attempt at water skiing behind her father’s speedboat. Our two children played with her two children, Jennifer and Doug. Our last visit was in the fall over lunch at the Royal York Hotel. She then went with us to Union Station and stood alone on the platform to wave us off to the airport. Altamae shared much: recipes, book selections, political views, interest in native culture, compassion, to name just a few . And over the years we had regular phone visits, the last being on June 26th when we said our “good-byes”. She was a very special friend—a very, very special person!

I was sorry to read in the Globe that wonderful, kind, smart and loving Altamae had died. She and I sat together on the Ontario Board of Parole. I have so many great memories of the times we worked together making difficult decisions but always with great consideration. I have enormous respect for her and enjoyed the many hours we spent together both on the board, at conferences and later lunches at her lovely home in Bobcaygeon. I will miss her newsy Christmas cards. She was such fun and very kind to me. I am lucky to have known her. Please accept my deepest sympathy. You and I will miss her.

Jennifer and Douglas,
I am sending this condolence on behalf of my father Bill and the Winter family in Whitby. We are all saddened to hear about your Mom, she was truly unique and giving. She shared similar caring values that my Mom Helen Winter did, and they became good friends through Mom's time on the Children's Aid Board when she served as President. There were also good sharing times in Bobcaygeon when Mom and Dad spent cottage time there.
Our deepest sympathies.
Catherine Smith (Winter)

I am so sorry to hear of Altamae's passing. Having met her two years ago, I have wished many times that I had met her sooner. We were all so fortunate to have known her, Thank you for sharing her with us. Altamae will live on in our hearts. She was truly an exceptional woman. My condolences for your loss.

We are still trying to process this sad news!!!
Great memories of earlier days in Whitby at the Curling Club with Altamae & Peter. More recent memories of Altamae as we retired to Bobcaygeon.
An amazing woman who definitely left all of us richer because of who she was and what she stood for!
The Book Club will never be the same without her insight, wit and wisdom!!!
Our sincere condolences to her children and grandchildren whom she adored!!!

Altamae was one of the most intelligent and wise people I've ever known. It was my delight to spend many afternoons with her, sitting by the river, sipping a glass of wine and discussing philosophy, art, the government, the village, the village's people, the lives of our children and grandchildren and their aspirations. I loved her very much, and I'm going to miss her immensely.
My deepest condolences to her family at this time. There are many of you I haven't yet met, but hope at sometime to connect with you in the village, perhaps. I'm sure she'll live, in a way, through all of you. Such a light has hers has to be passed on.....
