We just learned of popa Mike's passing . Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Although we know it is inevitable it is always difficult to lose a parent. Although I didn't meet him often he always had a smile and spoke as a friend.

To the Boysen families
Very sorry to hear of the passing of you father/grandfather. He was truly a gentleman who cared deeply for his family, enjoyed people and was generous lending a hand and contributing to his community. We have missed his visits in the last couple of years as his health declined, but remember him fondly and are glad to have known him.

I would like to share a special memory I had with Opa recently.
About a month ago my dad (Michael) and I went to visit Opa at case manor. He wasn't particularly responsive this day and seemed to be extremely sleepy...perhaps because of the medications.
I spent some time fixing up his hair and gave his legs a nice massage! He really liked this. Previously he had been able to go for a walk down the corridor but today he just didn't have the energy.
I decided to put on some music for him since he wasn't really conversing. I put on classical dutch music and he became more alert. I held his hand while I sat with him.
I then put on the Dutch national anthem and it was in this moment that things changed. He grasped my hands, lifted them up and held them with a complete firmness. He lifted his head and his eyes and from the floor to the ceiling. I could feel the way the music had awoken him and activated a memory or feeling in his brain! He held them firm for the duration of the piece and on the ending did a final shake of my hands! It was amazing :)
I will never forget this. It was extremely moving and the way he seemed to light up when listening to this music touched me very much. The power of music is unbelievable and I know that wherever he had been in his mind the music brought him right back home.
I have so much gratitude for the courage Opa had to leave his homeland behind and plant new roots here in Canada. I will be forever be grateful for the hours he put into our family tree and for keeping our heritage alive.
I love you Opa.
