Obituary of Bernice Harris
HARRIS, Bernice (nee Millar)
(1925-2018)
Passed away peacefully at the P.R.H.C. on Sunday July 8, 2018. Bernice was the eldest daughter of Mellvile and Alma Millar and part of a family of eight children who grew up on various farms in Smith-Township during the depression. Bernice met and married Elmer Tighe and shared with him a mutual interest in custom farming. For many years they operated in Peterborough County. She was one of the first women to haul grain to the Quaker. In 1968, Elmer suddenly passed away, and Bernice started a new career in the library of Adam Scott High School, where for over 25 years she mentored and assisted students. Until recently, she continued her interest in Adam Scott as a part of the Wall of Honour Committee. In 1973 she met and married John Harris and enjoyed being a part of many honour insurance conventions they attended together. On Saturday, June 30, they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with family members at home. Bernice never lost her love of Smith-Township and was part of the founding body of the Smith-Township Historical Society. This year she received her 35th year Ontario volunteer service award. As a part of the Executive she assisted and directed finances for the publication of many historical books. She has been recognized for her work by the City of Peterborough in the Pathway of Fame. Bernice is survived by her husband John, children Marilyn Nichols and Randy Tighe, her sister Shirley Hempstead, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
