Freda Little

Obituary of Freda Jessie Little

LITTLE, Freda Jessie “Freddie” (Mayers), 93, Leading Air Woman, passed away with family by her side on October 3, 2018. A veteran of World War II, she served in Gander, NF in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Radio Telephone Operator, guiding planes to airstrips using Morse code for refueling and service. These were memories that she considered some of the best days of her life.

Freda was born on April 21, 1925 in Leatherhead, England to Frederick and Ellen Mayers. In 1929, she immigrated to Hamilton, ON with her (now deceased) parents and brother Ralph.

Freda was a patient and loving mother to all of her children, extended family and neighbours too. Hallmark will miss her patronage as she would acknowledge every occasion with a card, noting her signature “love and hugs”. She touched many lives and fostered meaningful relationships throughout her life.

She is survived and will be dearly missed by her children, Connie Walsh (Mike), Louise Maher, Mary Hockaday (Bryan), Frank Little (Vivian Cartier), Laura McCambley (Greg), Bev York (Murray) and he who is fondly referred to as “the 9th child”, her nephew Allen Little (Sue); her grandchildren Melanie Rosenblatt (Michael), Steven Walsh (Petra), Adam Hockaday (Payton Gray), Daren Hockaday (Andrea Dorman), Tamara Pilatzkie (Steve), Cody Little, Rachel Cowan (Andrew), Garth Little, Shannon York and Kyle York; and her great-grandchildren Darah, Taylor, Mason, Megan, Tyler, Alicia, Gabe, Aubree, Liam and Lennon. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Little, and former husband, Barney Maher; her son, Kevin Little and her daughters, Karen McNamee and Maureen Little (who died in infancy).

Arrangements entrusted to THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, LAKEFIELD CHAPEL.  Cremation has taken place.

A private ceremony for immediate family to intern her ashes will be held at a later date to be determined at the Warsaw cemetery. In lieu of flowers or donations the family requests that you say “Thank you for your service” to every Veteran that you encounter.

Mum, you’ve now travelled the Highway of Heroes. May you rest in peace. xo
