Yes, the cottage on Balsam were the best memories. Uncle Ken kept that boat immaculate just as his own personal self. The mode of dress I recall most is pressed white jeans, desert boots and a very tidy shirt. Not a hair out of place. He kept all his pretty cars in the same way. He and Aunt Beth let me stay at their cottage on occassion, just me and them. One memory was Uncle Ken and I brushing our teeth outside with a cup of water as the plumbing had not been installed yet. If that isn't family sharing you tell me what is. Also a night spent with them in Oshawa during dicey winter weather so I could get to Durham College where I was enrolled in nursing school. There was a wood stove in the family room next to the kitchen; Uncle Ken was very frugal.
Good family times. Good family memories. It ended before we wanted it too. My tears are with you Auntie Beth and Bar and Brian and family. Wish I could be there with you. Much love and hugs.

Dear Aunt Beth, Brian, Barry, Neil, and families,
Words truly can’t express how heartbroken I am for you during this very difficult time.
One of my fondest memories growing up was the annual Ashton Family Picnic at the cottage on Balsam Lake. Oh, how us kids looked forward to it – so much so, that I’m sure we were the ones who originally coined the phrase “Are we there yet?”
Uncle Ken would grill up some hot dogs and hamburgers on the barbecue, and then Aunt Beth would come out of the boathouse with this tray of watermelon so precisely cut there was never a fight over who got the larger piece because they were all somehow the exact same size.
After lunch, Uncle Ken would lay down the law: “No getting in the water for one hour.” It was pure torture! But then he had to put up with all of us kids constantly asking him if an hour had passed, so I don’t know who suffered more!
Once we’d all had a good swim, and if the lake wasn’t too choppy, Uncle Ken would offer up boat rides. They were always a highlight of the day – except maybe for that one year when the boat quit working in the middle of the lake :) Spoiler alert: We did eventually make it back to shore, but as an imaginative youngster, I was sure it was going to turn into a whole Gilligan’s Island situation.
During my college years, Uncle Ken continued to play a major role in my summers by getting me a job at Croven Crystals. It was a wonderful opportunity and one I am forever grateful to have had, as the money I was able to earn at that job was a tremendous help in paying for my education.
We will miss you Uncle Ken, but you will live on forever in our hearts!

Although it's been several years since I have seen Ken, I have good memories of him and his family.
Working with Ken, his door was always open...especially if I had a money question :)
But my favourite times were when we played ball on the Croven team...
I can see Ken running and his ball cap falling off. Brian and Barry joined us as summer students and played as well.
My heart goes out to you all.
