A big, booming voice from a gentle soul! Alan & Norma hosted many neighbourhood parties over the twenty years we lived across the street, but the Sunday , John & Chris stole Alan’s lamb from his barbecue rotisserie you could hear him calling NORMA all over the Rouge! Memory that makes us laugh every time the story is told. Norma, Elaine, Neil and families we hope the memories of the good times bring you comfort.....John, Jo-Anne & family ( Marchment )

My mind has been alternately numb and racing since Neil sent the sad news.
I first met Alan in March of 1966, when he interviewed me after the Chair of Chemistry offered me the job as lab instructor for the first year chemistry course for the first full academic year of Scarborough College. The next time I saw him was on the grassy area outside Convocation Hall that June where we had one of my favourite pictures of Alan standing beside me in full Nottingham academic regalia to congratulate me after my convocation! I have almost an identical picture of Alan, this time in 1975 standing beside my younger sister Marilyn after her convocation!
While trying to remember things to tell about Alan, my brain lights up like a pin-ball machine - one memory careens off another, lighting up another - connected to yet another - all warm and fuzzy - usually related to food and drink and sports or sometimes even chemistry!
Before I was married, Roy and I shared many meals at the Walker’s and at the Dampney’s home (Penny was a biology instructor, Kit an astrophysicist) but the six of us - Norma, Alan (driving!), Penny, Kit, Roy and I - would pile into the huge Chrysler on Ridgewood and raced off across the 401 to enjoy a dinner together at the Black Angus Steakhouse in Kitchener! Once we watched Alan demolish a 32 oz. Porterhouse steak - because , if you proved you could finish it, your dinner was free!
Norma made my wedding dress and wouldn’t accept payment, so I offered instead to babysit Neil. I remember the first time; Alan was downstairs with 4-month old Neil lying on the rec room carpet. Norma was giving me last minute instructions when it became apparent to all of us that Neil was about to throw up. Alan jumped up and rushed to the baby and my heart skipped a beat - how sweet was that? But Alan was just moving Neil off the carpet to the tile floor!
Some of you may recall a picture of a beaming Alan (when wasn’t he beaming ?!) stirring the first wassail bowl in a large pot. I can’t recall if it was 1966 or ‘67 but Al and I had been discussing the faculty Christmas party and I had picked up a card from the LCBO for a mulled wine recipe called “Wassail Bowl” - and the rest, as they say, is history! Because I was unmarried and still living at home, the largest pot we could find - as seen in that picture - was my mother’s aluminum stock pot! I love the memory of sitting in his fifth floor office with Penny Dampney planning the feast of smoked salmon and cheeses and Christmas cake that would accompany this hot punch and then going out to buy the ingredients together!
Alan was not only my “boss”, he was a mentor, a colleague and a friend. We attended several chemistry conferences together, but we attended well over 200 Blue Jay’s games together with other college friends and “family”, starting in the early ‘80s with the $2, Dominion Store general admission tickets at Exhibition Park. Whoever was free - sometimes Neil, sometimes Ann Verner, sometimes Cathy Pickett - arrived early and held a spot in line for the other dozen or so who would arrive after classes. We continued through the glory years of the nineties attending more than 20 games per season sat in the upper deck of left field in the SkyDome!
Alan taught me “everything” I know. I actually came with a chemistry degree, but I continued to learn Chemistry from him as he generously shared his teaching experience and his research findings with me. He also taught me how to play snooker, billiards, squash and bridge and in spite of my ineptitude on all fronts agreed to play those games with me at the college - even encouraging me to enter faculty snooker tournaments! We participated together in duplicate bridge, college softball, Christmas volleyball games and summer golf (only twice!).
We remained friends sharing in our families’ milestones. When Roy and I had our son Scott, he too was captivated by Dr. Walker’s booming voice at College softball games and Blue Jays games and in the Walker’s back yard!
Only after Al’s retirement and he and Norma moved to Dummer Lake, did our meetings become less frequent but there were always reasons to get together - Christmas “inorganic chemistry” dinners and Ali Tayyeb memorial lunches.
His heart was as large as his voice and his funny retelling of oft heard but much loved stories will be sadly missed by all of us.
Roy, Scott and I wish for Norma, Neil, Elaine and their families that the hard edges of grief will soon soften through the warm remembrances of happy times.

Alan was a wonderful neighbour of ours on White Lake. He and Norma were always generous and welcoming to a fault.
I will always remember their surprise gift of 50 tulips planted in our garden on the occasion of my 50th birthday.
Alan's was a life well lived and we will miss him.

I met Alan, likely in 1970, after starting in Biology at the College in the fall of 68. We were all so lucky to be there in the Golden days. A huge advantage of a small size faculty and student body was mixing with teachers in French, English, Spanish, Geography, Physic, Math and of course Chemistry. Pat wrote a marvellous tale of celebrations with Alan producing his famous Wasel Bowl. What wonderful times, giving us all memories to this day!
But Alan was also the centre of our group of Blue Jays fans-some games there were 25 friends and their young ones up in the 5th deck in section 541. Our cheers were lead by Alan and later Neil added his taunts to the opposition and the umps! Both voices heard many miles away. I am so pleased to have been at the game for Alan's 80 the birthday! It was amazing when we talked about games many years before and Alan remembered details of players and plays-hazy for me but he was quick and accurate.
He was one of a kind.
You will have many marvellous memories and stories to tell and retell, as his friends will too.
My sympathy to you all.

Neil and Family,
Your Dad was obviously a very special man who will be greatly missed by many. No one can replace the love of a father, or fill the special place he holds in our hearts. But he will live on in your strong and generous spirit, your laughter, and the kindness he taught you to show others. My deepest condolences to you and your family. May your memories of him bring comfort and peace at this difficult time. Michelle Pottle (McGonigal)

Dear members of the Walker family:
It was with great sadness that I read of Alan’s passing. Although I had not seen him for many years, he had a profound impact on my studies, my career and my life as a whole. Alan gave me my first opportunity for research with a summer position at Scarborough College. I loved the experience and have never looked back; for this I owe him a debt of thanks. Equally as important to me is that he was there to help guide me and navigate the paperwork when I needed time away from the university after my mother’s passing. He was very supportive and understanding during this time.
He left many strong impressions with his engaging (“booming voice”) lectures. I still use his expression for electrons being held like “flies around the jam pot” to this day (with full credit given!). I am fortunate to have received a couple of his classic textbooks from him when he retired and have them on my office shelf. Norma, the piano continues to be played by my youngest son.
Alan was my earliest research mentor and became a friend. I recall celebrating the end of my second summer research project with a single malt scotch from his enviable collection: I am grateful that he did not kick me out when I asked for it to be mixed with ginger ale (he rightly refused this absurd request). For this teaching moment too, I owe him my thanks.
As members of his family, you all know what a great person he was. I write this brief message so that you know that others, far and wide, held this same opinion of him.
With my sincere condolences,
John Corrigan

As a late teen and having graduated from highschool I came directly to Scarborough College in 1968 and was 'secretary' to a fantastic group of people, one of them being Professor Alan Walker. I typed many of his papers etc on an IBM Selectric typewriter (not understanding a word of what I was doing and drawing all the funny molecules by hand etc). But the fun was had in the afterhours at the many 'wassel' bowls he created over the years, group trips to the Penthouse or Running Pump (then heading to Alan's house hoping Norma would let us in), his many squash games at lunchtime, his sitting on edge of lab table and it tipping and chemicals hitting the floor..... (was slightly injured but as always recovered). He made my introduction to the work force a lot of fun and was one of the many reasons that I stayed on working there for so many years. It was too hard to part with such close 'family' ties. I often think of my time there and the fun we had and he will be greatly missed. My sincere condolensces to Norma and family.

Norma and Family,
I didn't know Alan very well but saw him at several ABE lunches over the years and always found him so friendly to me, a person he only knew through Norma's teaching career. His smile was very warm and welcoming. I am so sorry for your loss and will be thinking of you all during the difficult days ahead.

Dad: You will be missed by our entire family. You were an amazing Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend. You were always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. You were always there to offer scholastic help to anyone in need. You were always there to talk sports of any kind. Maybe even the Leafs will soon hoist Lord Stanley! You saw the Raptors win it all too. Together we saw many a baseball diamond across North America! You recently finished FIRST at Bridge, although you filled me in even when you finished last! You mind was still as sharp as ever, but your body could simply not go on. You are no longer with us, but I am thankful that you are no longer in pain. You will be missed, but never forgotten Dad. I LOVE you!! Neil.
