Van Duyn: Martinus “Martin”

Passed away at the P.R.H.C. on Friday March 19, 2021.  Martin Van Duyn of Peterborough in his 93rd year.  Born in the Netherlands in 1928, Martin attended the University of Delft in the 1950’s in Engineering.  Following this, he moved to the U.S.A. and completed his internship in Pittsburgh.  He enjoyed an illustrious career in Engineering having worked in the U.S.A., Netherlands, Canada and Switzerland and working fully in five different languages.  He completed his Masters of Engineering at University of Toronto in 1983 and in 1999 he received the Engineering Excellence Award.  Martin was the holder of many patents and had the reputation for being the Engineer to send in when others were struggling. He spent many years at General Electric in Peterborough as well as many years of consulting.  He was the President of Trent Technology Inc. In 1954, Martin married the love of his life, Irene, by proxy, and she then moved to Canada to join him.  Martin loved sailing and playing tennis, even teaching tennis into his 87th year.  Throughout his life, he always remained a true gentleman who lived his life in kindness and service to his family and others.  His soft demeanour and humble attitude will be remembered by many.

Martin is the loving husband of the late Irene (née Hofman) (d. 2018).  Dear father of Josée and grandfather of Michael (Gloria), Alexandra (Vladimir) and great grandfather of Landon, Austin, Amelia, Mason and Finley. Survived by several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his parents Adrianus and Wilhelmina, brothers Wim and Ad and sisters Gerda and Corry.  Visitation will be held at THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, LAKEFIELD CHAPEL, 66 Queen Street, Lakefield on Friday March 26, 2021 from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.  A funeral service will follow in the chapel at 1:00 pm.  To register to attend the visitation or the service please visit www.hendrenfuneralhome.com.  If you are unable to attend the service, you may watch the funeral service by clicking on the link provided on the Memorial Page for Martin on the website.  Everyone must wear a face covering and remain in their vehicles in the funeral home parking lot until their designated time.  Memorial donations may be made to the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (L.A.W.S.) or the Alzheimer Society as expressions of sympathy and may be made by contacting the funeral home at www.hendrenfuneralhome.com or by calling 705-652-3355.
