Sanford was my boss as a summer student in 1965 in Apsley. He was a wonderful person and became one of those people in one's life that you tried to emulate. He discovered leaking dynamite in the stone shed behind the office and I went over to see what he was doing. He was carefully picking up sticks of wet dynamite and putting them in a cardboard box. I watched him the whole time, having complete confidence in him. He put the box in the back of his half ton and we put it on top of a stump and set it off. Another time we blew a beaver dam and rocks where falling all around us. Lots of nights sitting in the game preserve waiting for poachers. One night we seized a new car! Sanford was furious that they had shot a yearling. This guy had real courage and was totally professional in his own country manner, with no bravado. Tremendous guy! Thanks Sanford!

One of my fondest memories are of all the Sunday school picnics we used to have at Uncle Sandford and Aunt Ella’s house in the summertime. Great times with extended family and friends.
Uncle Sandford was a great gentle, kind man and he will be missed.
Love and condolences to all of his family.

My condolences to all of Sanford's family. I was honoured to be able to work at times with Sanford during his last years before retirement from the MNR. His knowledge of the bush, his personality and sense of fairness should be something to strive for by all all conservation officers. Rest in Peace Gord Holmes

I had the privilege of working a few night shifts with Sanford. It appeared that there were reports of night hunting in the Nephton mines area.
While we sat in the MNR truck listening for shots and watching for spotlights, we had some time to chat. Not being aware of Sanford’s devotion to his faith, I used some colorful language that included a few profanities. But at no time did Sanford admonish me or try to save my soul.
During our encounters with hunters & anglers, I also saw that Sanford led by example not just words.
One pearl of wisdom that I gleaned while working with Sanford was to always show respect towards the resource users we encounter, even those we find to be in violation. That to him meant being aware that if the role was reversed & the other fellow was wearing the uniform & carrying a badge, we would expect no less than to be treated respectfully & professionally.
I tried to keep that creed in mind during the many years I served as a field Conservation Officer.
I offer my sincere condolences to Sanford’s family & friends.

Faren and families :
I would like to share my condolences and heartfelt sympathies, during this difficult time of mourning, since the passing of Sanford.
I first got to meet Sanford, in 1975, when he would visit our deer and moose hunting camp, in his capacity as warden, with the Lands and Forests, in what is now the KHSS park. Always an interesting and knowledgeable gentleman, to converse with. May Sanford Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.

So sorry to hear of Sanford's passing.
During the Lands and Forests period I spent many hours with him in and around the Peterborough Crown Game Preserve. His knowledge of the bush and local geography was remarkable. A quiet, gentle man everyone respected. The lessons I learned from him relative to people and natural resources stayed with me throughout my own career. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him.

Very sorry to hear of Sanford's passing, he will be missed by all that knew him. I had the good fortunate to work with Sanford from 1976 to 1978 in the Bancroft District when I was a Conservation Officer there. Sanford was a dedicated Officer and a very good trainer and teacher, he taught me many things about being an Officer and a better person. I never remember Sanford having a bad day, his smile would light up a room or a office as soon as he walked in. My sincere condolences to all of his Family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. At this time your lose is great, but I remember a man who made such a difference to the natural resources of Ontario and in particular the Apsley area and the Bancroft District. As a Conservation Officer Sanford was respected by all who knew him. He was a mentor to many and a wealth of information to those who listened. The world is a better place because Sanford was in it...he made a difference. “Thank you Sanford”
