Dear Joan, Greg, Evan, Laura, Peter, Carol, Sarah and Dave:
As I drive today from Toronto to join you to take leave of your beloved husband and father (and my "elder" cousin), John, I will be thinking about all those wonderful visits to the farm over the years; of hay rides and sugaring off and walks in the back 40 and doing battle with potato bugs! I will remember John with a twinkle in his eye, holding forth about horses and the weather, political and otherwise. And I will be reminded of another great farmer, the Kentucky poet Wendell Berry who wrote:
We travellers, walking to the sun, can't see
Ahead, but looking back the very light
That blinded us shows us the way we came,
Along which blessings now appear, risen
As if from sightlessness to sight, and we,
By blessing brightly lit, keep going toward
The blessed light that yet to us is dark.
Every blessing and much love on behalf of the Rumsey family, Suzanne Rumsey
