Hermie Bauer

Obituary of Hermie Bauer

Brave, lovely, kind, caring, inspirational, strong and always there to help; these words are used by many to describe Hermie Bauer and her life.

Born on March 22, 1934 in the small village of Wolfsegg in Austria before moving to Linz, Austria where she grew up as a foster child; married Josef Bauer at 19 and left for Canada on her own, following her husband 6 months after his departure. She arrived in Halifax on March 21, 1954 and had her 20th Birthday on the train from Halifax to Toronto. Her family and circle of friends grew as she created a career from entrepreneur as a newcomer to RN at age 49.  Hermie became the greatly beloved matriarch of our whole family.  We can all vouch for her great capacity to forgive, her generosity of spirit and her love of giving. Predeceased by her foster sister Hilda by more than 60 years and husband by almost 10 years to the day.   Hermie was the loving mother of Doris, Karin (Bob), and Jeff (Karen) her grandchildren Joshua (Katrina), Kiera (Dylan), Connor (Angela), Riley and Shavaughn.  She was a wonderful aunt for Rick (Liz), Linda (Ernst), Elfi (Sylvester), Ingrid (d. Walter), Reinhart (Denise); great aunt to Birgit, Rainer, Doris, Danielle, Brittney, Robert, Erick, Alex and their spouses; and grand aunt to Yoancito, Ben, Samantha, Mateo, Maevie, Henrik and Mason. Family was the most important thing to Hermie.  Her second love was travel.

Hermie passed away gently and peacefully on the evening on Dec. 8, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. With strength and determination, she fought to remain with us and wanted nothing more than to be with her family for Christmas but when the battle became overwhelming she said good bye and her spirit left quietly.   Her daughter Karin fought valiantly by her side daily since November 4, 2024 to ensure the best possible medical and personal care.  Other family members also spent much time with Hermie over the past month. We all love you mom and you will forever be in our hearts.  Your spirit will live in the hearts of the many people’s lives you touched.

A Celebration of Hermie’s Life will be held on her 91st Birthday on Saturday, March 22, 2025.  Details to be announced at a later date.  Save the date because we would love to see you there.  People will be welcome to celebrate her wonderful life and share fondest memories.

Afterlife arrangements entrusted to the HENDREN FUNERAL HOME-LAKEFIELD CHAPEL.  In lieu of flowers our family requests donations be made to YWCA Women’s Shelter in Peterborough.  Condolences and donations may be made by visiting www.hendrenfuneralhome.com  or by calling 705-652-3355.

Thank you to Alisha and Sharon at the Regency for their prompt response to Hermie’s accident and to the responders who so carefully aided her transport to hospital; to Robin, her kind, caring  and supportive RN, on her final day and all the friends and family members who helped support Hermie specifically as well as those people who supported us during this difficult time.
