Mavis
I was saddened to hear the news about John. I always had a lot of respect for him. He was a good, kind friend. It was an honour to have worked with him for a few short years.

Mavis, Ruth and Family,
I want to offer my deepest condolences to you and your family, in regards to John's passing. Unfortunately, I'm not able to make today, yet definitely sharing your loss of John at this time, albeit with a pint or 2 in hand and tears in my eyes.
I have so much that I could say about how John affected my life and all of those that he coached, yet ill try to make it brief.
John was like no other coach that I had in my entire life of rugby or for that matter any sport. You knew right of the bat with John, where you stood. He drew the map for everyone and if you followed, you'd be alright, veer of that map and well, you pay the price and learn the lesson hopefully. ( best example of that was in Wales Scott Yaschuk, Edwin and Dale Gennette decided to engage in some late night festivities and showed up to morning practice late- not sure how many sprints they did, yet they finished them all, albeit their insides came outside a few times!!) John demanded respect and got it, one way or the other:)
That's where the story begins, John had the love and passion of rugby inside him and he thankfully shared it with all of us! I knew i liked rugby when i started, yet i didnt know how much i loved it, till John showed up. The respect he had for us and the sport, his passion to show us what could be and his overwhelming love for all of us, is truly a testament to a great man, husband, father and mentor and most notably Coach. We were boys when he arranged for us to take the game seriously and travel to Wales and by then time he brought us back, we were men. The Wales Tour defines a period in my rugby life that i will never forget. None of us had truly experienced anything like the 3 weeks we spent in Wales. It brought together as a team and band of brothers and taught us the respect for the sport of Rugby we had never seen before. The memories of that trip play in my mind on a consistent basis over the last 28 years and will for the rest of my life- it by far is the greatest memory that i have of my rugby career! All because of John, he instilled in us , the love of the game: teamwork , work ethic, trust, passion, joy, tears and being your best. There is no other sport like Rugby anywhere in the world, that allows, once bitter foes from various rugby teams in Nova Scotia to come together and become over 2 years of practicing, scrimmaging, pissing one another off to eventually become a band of brothers who spent 3 amazing weeks in a haven for Rugby- and have a memory that brings smiles to everyone's faces , when you bring up the Wales Tour!!- All of that because of John- we lost a great man on Friday, someone who i will never forget , for what he did for my rugby career and many others. You've lost a Husband and a Father, a man i know that loved his wife and family very, very much! God Bless to all of you, John will forever live in our hearts, minds and memories- with much love Neil

Dear Auntie Mavis, Mike, Judi, Ruth and families,
We are so sorry for your loss and send our love and sympathy to you all. As Dad says, we have so many happy memories of Uncle John over the years. He was kind, full of fun and always had time for us when we were growing up. He made Tom so welcome when he stayed with his Canadian "Mum" (Judi) and really took the time to get to know him. Judi, your Father really was a Dad to be immensely proud of. He will be greatly missed but his warmth, humour and kindness lives on in you and yours.
Gorffwys mewn heddwch, Ewythr John xxx

We have so many happy memories of our friendship with you and John over the years.
John was very well liked and highly respected during his role as Chief Fuel Engineer at the giant steelworks in Corby, Northamptonshire. He was also number one supporter, founder member and player of East Carlton Cricket Club......who are now sadly short of an opening bat, John.
Much love, sympathy and prayers are sent from our family to yours,

Mavis and Family,
My sincerest condolences on your loss. John will be remembered by all as a man of integrity who had a very positive influence on the lives he touched, especially those from the rugby community in Nova Scotia. Both he and you Mavis, deserve much credit for making the 1988 Wales Rugby Tour a success, so much so, that it is the highlight of conversation when former players meet. I consider it a great honour and privilege to have known John and will always treasure his pearls of wisdom.

Our deepest condolences & prayers to you, Mavis, Ruth, and family on the passing of John. Greg & I have worked many years at Bowes & Cocks, as Ruth being our office secretary, a smiling face that greeted every one that opened that front door. Her accent was very distinct, and everyone loved it, she was so loved at the Lakefield office, and we were all so sad to see her move on to another job last year, and we all miss her. She loved with no boundaries, her parents, and chose to live with them over the last years to assist, and give any help she could with her Dad fighting Parkinson's. Wonderful, and loving family, and we feel your pain so sincerely. Please know we are both here if you need anything at all, now or in the future, and that is a sincere statement, not just words...
