I am sorry to read of Mr Nickel’s passing. He was my music teacher from 1976 to 1980. The last time we met was about 20 years ago on the West Upland Hiking trail in Algonquin. He was one of those teachers who went above and beyond and really cared about his students (“animals”)! And we cared about him. I have many fond memories of my time in music class and the Band at Runnymede (the Barn dance on our Owen Sound exchange, sorting a trailer load of Oranges to name a couple). Memories that put a smile on my face and will last my whole life. My Condolences to his family. Im sorry for your loss. Rest In Peace Sir. Chris Martin

Don Nickel was my music teacher at Runnymede CI from 1962-67. He was a fantastic music teacher. As a result I am now able to appreciate music to a much deeper level than otherwise. Although he created the motivation for me to pursue music post secondary school, I lacked the talent and became an engineer instead. I was overjoyed to spend some time reminiscing at RCI's 75 anniversary in 2002. Some teachers just have a special place in one's education. Mr. Nickel was one of them. Thank you "Uncle Don". Don Nickel -- always Mr. Nickel to me -- was a superb teacher, likely the most influential one that I ever encountered. He took untrained Grade 9 students and turned them into competent musicians within a couple of years, and in most he also instilled a life-long love of music. He did this through a mix of humour, inspiration and the occasional loud word or intense stare. We never wanted to let him down. The Senior Band's victory in the Kiwanis Music Festival in the late 1960s remains a highlight of my life. Fred Edwards, RCI, 1965-70

Please send my condolences to Don’s family, particularly Kay . Both my parents , Bill Gough and Hilka Gough were long time friends of theirs . My father and Don were colleagues and close friends right up until my father’s passing in 2006 . They both had an intense passion for knowledge and bird watching and I remember the deep conversations about both topics . Both Don and Kay were at our cottage in Huntsville many times and I have many fond hilarious memories of shenanigans that they participated in . Don was widely recognized as a phenomenal music teacher but had other memorable talents . I remember his fantastic swimming skills as one example ! I’m sad to hear of his passing but the fantastic happy memories I have of both Don and Kay stand paramount . I hope that Don reconnects with my father Bill out in the Universe somewhere . I know my dad would love to reconnect and discuss the current world political situation if not the latest bird he has seen .
